FIBER ARTISAN Some people are just born to be behind sewing machines! After years of trying to be a student, eventually graduating from Washington State University with a degree in Recreation, and then working with the Bend Parks Department, Sue Yocom found out that she was one of those people. Sue started her 30 plus year career sewing tipi's, then working with Mt. Bachelor making covers for the snow machines, and then expanded into wall tents and boat covers. She finally decided that canvas and heavy cordura were not her favorite pallets! So, after living in Bend, Oregon for 10 years, she packed up her bags, went back to school in Salt Lake City, Utah to learn more about design and pattern making. While in Salt Lake, Sue was introduced to many large companies that taught many many lessons in the construction of garments. Sue gained intense experience in the textile industry working as the production manager for several of these companies. And just as important….she was able to pursue her passion for skiing!
Sue also met and married her husband, an avid outdoorsman, and once they started a family, it was time to reconsider once more. Sue really wanted to raise her family in a small town atmosphere, so packed up the bags once again, and back to Oregon she came…..this time settling in Sisters. Armed with all the knowledge and experience gained in her Utah adventures, Sue opened her own design and manufacturing company, Black Crater Clothing. She employs seamstresses that she spends months training, and then they work out of their own homes.
The out of doors has always played a very large part in her life. She is now enjoying running and biking in the summer and skate skiing and snow shoe running in the winter. After all, with all the hours spent behind the sewing machine, one really needs to blow off some steam! Designing and sewing continues to be Sue’s passion…. and it is evident in every piece of her work.
